Petrol? That’s a fossil fuel, mummy – JD, 4
Before Miss J was born, I had never owned a car. I still don’t have a licence. We lived in London when JD came along in 2007 and it was just easier to use public transport.
When we moved out to the country soon after, it made sense to keep up the habit and we made do for years with buses and trains.
But then Miss J arrived and within days we could see that public transport with a preschooler and newborn is no picnic. By the time Miss J was six weeks old, we’d given in and bought a car.
We still don’t use it that often – mostly at weekends for adventures, the ‘big shop’ and, of course, in emergencies – but I don’t like to think how we’d cope without it. Of course, it does mean we’re more directly affected by petrol prices, which currently average £1.38 a litre, so a new scheme from Morrisons looks to be right up our street.
Morrisons Fuel Saver
Morrisons fuel saver is quite a unique way of saving money. You buy a gift card from Morrisons during your weekly shop and at the same time you get a voucher that gives you 1p a litre off your next petrol top up for every £10 you’ve just spent of giftcards. So you if buy a £100 gift card, that’s 10p a litre of your next fuel purchase.
You then use the gift card you’ve bought to pay for your shopping in any one of 34 high street brands, including Next, Boots, and Homebase.
Would I use it?
I will be doing, actually. Our nearest Morrisons is only a short drive away and has a fresh produce market so is well worth the trip. With brands like Toys R Us, Debenhams and Dorothy Perkins participating, I think this could be a great way to save up for Christmas while also saving money on fuel.
The official stats reckon the typical saving on fuel for customers will be 6% when filling up a 60 litre tank and that’s not to be sniffed at. And if you bought the gift card with your a cashback-giving credit card, you could save even more money.
Would you use it?
To make a scheme like this work for you, you’d probably need to be organised. Personally, I’ll need to ask myself, where am I going to need to spend money this week/month and how much? Then I’ll have to put that on my shopping list with the carrots and nappies to make sure I get the right gift cards and the right amounts.
Is that how you’d do it? I’d love to know your thoughts.
