Tilda Humara range: rice pouches for time-poor fans of Asian food (review)

Tilda

Try? – Miss J, 2

You’re probably already familiar with Tilda‘s microwavable rice pouches, ready in 2 minutes. Well now they’ve launched the Humara range – a set of five pouches designed to offer authentic Asian flavours and healthy ingredients and each variety coming in at under 170 calories per portion.

Pre-packed food will never quite match up to from-scratch cooking, but Tilda pouches are great for when you’re in a hurry and want something tasty and quick.

The Khichdi variety pictured above is made with wholegrain basmati and steamed mung dal lentils – it’s lovely as part of a lunchtime snack with green beans, or as an accompaniment to a curry. Each filling portion contains less than 140 calories, so it’s a great choice if you’re watching your weight.

The Biryani variety is an aromatic blend of basmati rice, garam masala and mint. Delicious and the rice is just 160 calories per portion. Try serving with peas and shredded steamed carrots.

The Hyderabadi Masala variety is a wholegrain basmati rice with a heady blend of garam masala, cardamom, ginger, chilli, toasted onions, kalonji seeds and onions. 160 calories per portion. Try serving with yogurt marinated lamb or tofu.

The Mushroom Hakka variety is a favourite of mine - wholegrain basmati rice, mushroom, ginger and soy sauce to give a distinctively Indo-Chinese flavour at just 161 calories per portion. It’s delicious with green beans, grilled chicken or spiced soy mince.

Finally, there’s Kheer, a basmati rice pudding flavoured with a fragrant hint of cardamom and nutmeg. This dessert is nothing like the tins of heavy rice pud you might be used to. It’s delicate and light, containing just 153 calories per portion.

All of the rices in the new Tilda Humara range are gluten free, suitable for vegetarians and free from any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They’re not very hot, spice-wise, so more adventurous little eaters may like them too, just watch the portion size as each pouch contains 1.4g of salt.

Tilda Humara pouches are available from Sainsbury’s and Ocado, priced at £1.69 for a 240g pouch – perfect for keeping in the drawer at work!

It is hard to find healthy choices when you are in a rush, ill or just having a complete life fail so it is good to know that there are tasty options out there when I am out of action or in need of something delicious with no effort involved. It is a shame that the salt content is on the high side but as it is a convenience food I suppose it is to be expected and fine if these are something you only eat occasionally.
