Recently, Mark, JD (7), Miss J (3) and I spent the day at CONKERS, a family-friendly visitor attraction at the heart of The National Forest in the Midlands.
It was a brilliant day, spent enjoying much of what the award-winning attraction has to offer, including indoor and outdoor experiences across 120 acres of maturing woodlands, lakes, ponds, play areas.
We started the day with orienteering challenge.
Armed with a map, we were sent across the grounds to locate lettered clues. Successfully collecting all the letters and figuring out the anagram would result in a mystery prize to help with the next session. This was good fun and gave a chance to explore the park.
Next, we all met up at the bush craft area to take on three-part challenge. Each family built a shelter using ropes and tarpaulin, made a fire (or rather tried – we were rubbish at it!) and then, after we upped sticks and moved in with the family next door, we toasted s’mores, which was just lovely.
Next up was a barefoot challenge with the Rangers. I was really pleased to see the kids get stuck in with this, squelching their toes through, mud, water and clay.
After washing up, it was time for a quick train ride to lunch at Waterside and the kids enjoyed the adventure playground well into the afternoon.
For the more adventurous, there are very impressive assault courses to try out.
On our way back to the main centre, we found a live kid’s show in full swing. A great end to a great day.
