Trialling the WHIRLPOOL 8kg 6th Sense Supreme Care Washing Machine
We’re a busy family of four. We like messy play, scampering in the woods, cooking, craft and generally making a mess. We produce a lot of laundry, so an efficient and effective washing machine is essential.
AO.com sent us the Whirlpool 6th Sense Supreme Care washing machine to trial, and we’ve really been putting it through its paces. It’s an 8kg, front loading washing machine – steady, reliable and with a few extra features that really make it stand out against its competitors.
We all know that laundry really starts piling up once you have kids, especially kids who think clothes are ‘dirty’ even if they only wore them for three seconds. The 8kg capacity is ideal for a larger household. To give some perspective as to what 8kg means, you can wash 40 t-shirts or about 8-10 full outfits in one load (more if we’re talking toddler clothes).
6th Sense Technology
The 6th Sense portion of the machine’s name refers to intelligent sensors within the unit that adapt resources according to the size and type of load, offering savings of up to 50% on energy, water and time. This means that the machine only washes what’s in it rather than sticking stubbornly to a set program like most other washers.
Supreme Care & Wave Motion
Anyone who’s used a washing machine with poor controls knows how confusing something quite simple can become. The. Supreme Care is Whirlpool’s badge of top design, features and functionality of the unit – the controls on the machine are intuitive and simple – everything is explained on the digital display and it really walks you through the programme settings so you get just what you need for any given load.
The 6th Sense Supreme Care machine also features intelligent ‘Wave Motion’ technology, which adapts the motion of the drum during a cycle to ensure that laundry is evenly and delicately distributed and that each item of clothing receives equal attention.
All this means washes come out clean and surprisingly on their way towards dry, thanks to a very effective spin cycle which shakes off most of the excess water.
Short wash cycle
We all drop the ball despite our best laid plans sometimes, right? I can’t be the only one who says, ‘Right, time to get dress, we’ve got a busy Saturday!’ only to realise two of us have no clean jans and one of us is completely lacking in clean underwear. D’oh.
The Whirlpool 6th Sense Supreme Care features a ’15 minute quick wash’ program for loads of up to 3kg.
It is a life saver during the week too when you realise over breakfast that you haven’t washed their sport kit – you can get it washed and into the dried over breakfast, in time to go into their school bags and save you an extra drive down to the school in the afternoon.
Those of us with busy lifestyles (and let’s face it, that’s pretty much all of us!) know that sometimes you’ll throw a load on and then go about your day, only to get caught up in other tasks to that when you do finally unload the washer, the load you’ve done doesn’t smell as fresh as it should and may even need to washed again.
It’s frustrating and wasteful, so Whirlpool have factored a solution in to the 6th Sense Supreme Care. This clever washing machine can intermittently tumble your clothes for up to 6 hours after the cycle ends. This keeps clothes smelling and feeling fresh if you aren’t available to remove them immediately.
Quiet Zentechnology and energy efficient
As I’ve often bemoaned in previous household gadget reviews,a recurrent problem with many household appliances is the noise they make. Whirlpool is among a group of brands with an increasing commitment to making products that are as quiet as possible, and the 6th Sense Supreme Care unit has been accredited by Quiet Mark, which is a national charitable organisation committed to reducing everyday noise made by household tools and appliances.
In real terms, it means this is the quietest washing machineI’ve trialled to date. It doesn’t rattle or whir, it just emits a slight ‘woo’ sound during the peak of the spin cycle, not unlike a quiet, comical ghost. From the front room, I can barely hear it running in the kitchen, and we have a small house. It’s astounding.
How is this achieved? Well apparently, traditional washing machines operate via a belt drive which means that the motor rotates a belt which then in turn rotates the drum. The 6th Sense Supreme Care unit instead contains a high-performance traction motor that directly rotates the drum. This means less vibration, lower spin speed, and significantly reduced noise .
This Whirlpool Washing Machine also features an outstanding A+++ energy rating and from a cost and environmental perspective, this is the standard to look for when buying new appliances.
Overall, this is a superb washing machine. It is high tech, but not just for show. Each flashy feature serves to make life easier. With the Whirlpool 6th Sense Supreme Care, you get clean clothes, delivered quickly and efficiently.
