Are you tuning in for the return of Dallas?

A conscience is like a boat or a car. If you feel you need one, rent it – JR Ewing

It’s back. Dallas is back! That famous, perhaps infamous American TV series from the seventies about a wealthy oil and cattle dynasty embroiled in a fierce battle for power, love and the Southfork ranch.

Did you watch it the first time round? Did you have a crush on Bobby (Patrick Duffy) Ewing? Did you ask your hairdresser for a Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) Ewing? Did you scream at the TV when a whole season was revealed to have been ‘just a dream’?

I didn’t. I was born in the eighties and TV wasn’t really my thing. Dallas was nothing more than a vague collection of memories of implausible plot lines and bad hair. That is until, much to the chagrin of my lovely husband, Warner sent us Dallas: The Complete DVD Collection. And I watched it.

The verdict? It’s silly, trashy, watchable stuff. It’s not my thing, but I still sat and watched it. And now it’s returning to our screens tonight (5th September) with a brand new series on Channel 5 at 9pm. Will you be watching? I just might be…

Scooby-Doo! Laff-A-Lympics: Spooky Games

It’s not scary, mummy, because it’s funny – JD, 4

If your little ones like cartoons and have been taking an interest in all the sports gracing our fair shores lately, they’ll almost certainly like the latest Scooby Doo DVD, which contains a new episode set at an international sporting event in London *ahem*.

The DVD also contains 12 original episodes from the 1970s, which may bring back a few memories among parents, especially as a few other classic cartoon characters such as Yogi Bear and Fred Flintstone make an appearance.

Spooky Games is available on DVD from Warner Home Video for £4.99. It’s fun, it’s silly and it’s on JD’s current list of weekend favourites.

I’d forgotten how much I like Pokémon

Ash, Pikachu and friends embark on a new adventure

Yes, yes, I know Pokémon is for kids – actually I was already about 14 when it first came out, but I’ve always rather liked it. Eternal battles between good and evil, explosions, fights and cute fantasy animals – what’s not to love?

Last week, the baton of Pokémon worship was passed to JD when a double DVD pack landed on our doormat for review, containing ‘Pokémon The Movie: Black – Victini and Reshiram‘ and ‘Pokémon The Movie: White – Victini and Zekrom‘.

Here’s the blurb:

When Ash and his friends enter a battle competition in Eindoak Town, they meet the Mythical Pokémon Victini, who becomes their newest friend. But disaster strikes when the misguided wanderer Damon seizes Victini for his own plans! Can Ash prove himself a hero and earn the help of the Legendary Reshiram—or Zekrom—to rescue Victini and save Eindoak Town?

I’m not sure JD grasped the full storyline in both parts, but he kept telling me how good it was, and he had a good appreciation throughout of who was a ‘goodie’, who was a ‘baddie’, and whether things were going well or badly.

I would consider it suitable for a mature four year old. JD, who can be quite sensitive at times, watched it with complete enjoyment throughout and needed no reassuring words.

Rated PG, it’s probably more violent than a U, but because it’s very fantasy-based, it doesn’t feel as scary as many U-rated animated adventures out this year. This is mainly because the characters can’t actually be seriously hurt – they just faint and then return to their owners to heal.

Here’s the trailer:

We spent the following day drawing Pokémon characters and colouring them in. There’s something very compelling about the little creatures of which there are more than 640 in the Pokémon universe.

I can see this release kicking off the Pokémon craze all over again, and I’ll have my very own little ‘Pokémon Trainer’ to battle with :)

‘Pokémon The Movie: Black – Victini and Reshiram’ and ‘Pokémon The Movie: White – Victini and Zekrom’ are out on dual DVD and bluray now, priced £12.99.
