29/52: A summer of recipes

Ovens are hot, so we can’t go near – JD, 4

We’ve been cooking. A lot. Miss J and JD parked at the kitchen table, kneading dough and tearing peppers, me running around shuffling pans and stirring sauces. We love it.

So this week’s pic is a montage of what we’ve been making and a taste of what is to come. Hungry yet?

26/52: Those three little words

It’s because she listens to me and she gives lots of attention to what I’m saying – JD, 4

I don’t like boastful parenting. “Ooh, my child was doing dishes at 9 months and by two years old he’d moved out and got a job in the city. What has YOURS done?” No, no, no.

But I have to boast a bit about Miss J’s achievements this week, and how JD has supported her. I just have to. Because it’s been one of those big weeks where their relationship strengthened and she suddenly sprang forward developmentally. I want to share it with you…

She’s talking

All of a sudden, Miss J went from babbling the odd syllable to talking. She can say THREE WORDS clearly, “daddy”, “again” and “yeah” – the last of which she says in an enthusiastic whisper, mirroring the way we say it to her. JD is fascinated and spends careful hours coaxing words from her with gentle songs and smiles.

She’s clapping

With her feet planted firmly on the foot plate of her Tripp Trapp, her dexterity has improved noticeably and she’s clapping at everything from the offer of food, to Tree Fu Tom, to the arrival of Mark home from work – always accompanied by a huge cheesy grin. JD’s dances bring her out in a full round of applause.

She’s climbing and pulling herself to standing

Miss J launched herself at a beanbag and scaled up it like a pro. Then she climbed down, crawled over to the sofa and stood herself up, grinning wildly. I just sat there open mouthed, wondering where my helpless little newborn had gone as JD pulled on my sleeve and pointed proudly.

So yeah, she’s eight months, he’s four years old and they are both amazing. All kids are in their own special, wonderful ways.

24/52: are you my mum?

Long, long ago in the far mists of time – The Somethingosaur

Oops. I missed Week 24 of my photo a week challenge, Project 52. And I’d been doing so well! Not to be beaten, I’m posting today and will post again tomorrow for week 25, bringing us back up to date.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks – I’ve been on the radio a few times talking about blogging, we’ve moved house and Mark managed to squash his finger in the car door.

But in the quieter moments, we’ve been enjoying this great picture book, The Somethingosaur, which is a take on the classic “are you my mummy?” tale with and a lovely surprise ending. It has a Julia Donaldson feel about it that makes it a joy to read aloud and the illustrations are great.

It’s published by HarperCollins and available in hard back for £10.99

Disclosure: we were sent The Somethingosaur free of charge for review. No payment was received for this post. All posts are 100% honest.

23/52: Derby, Birchover Apartments and the Heights of Abraham

We will come here again soon, won’t we? – JD, 4

It was really tough to choose just one photo to sum up the adventures we had this week in Derby and Matlock, so here are six.

We stayed in an absolutely stunning luxury apartment in Derby, supplied very kindly by Carl at Birchover Hotel Apartments. You may remember I did a giveaway a few months back for a stay at Birchover. Now that I’ve been there, I can honestly say that it is as stunning as it sounds.

We stayed in a two double bedroom penthouse with en suite bathrooms, a gorgeous living room, dining area and fitted kitchen all to ourselves. There was even a private sauna in our apartment. Truly the nicest place I’ve ever stayed.

After our journey up from Lincoln on Monday morning, we took a stroll round Derby city centre and did some shopping. Up early Tuesday morning, we headed into Matlock, just 15 miles from our apartment, where Carl had arranged a family pass for us to enter the Heights of Abraham.

The attraction is right up in the Peaks, and the majority of visitors took the cable cars that zipped up and down the hillside, but I didn’t fancy dangling precariously at 450ft so we opted to walk up. As it wasn’t really pushchair terrain, Mark carried Miss J while I walked ahead with JD.

It isn’t an easy walk – my hamstrings are still protesting – but we reached the midway point feeling exhilarated and took a tour in an old lead mine, made all the more entertaining by JD shouting, “You already know ALL this, don’t you, mummy?” at every fact the tour guide shared. Oops.

Another trek and we were greeted at the top by a cafe, where we enjoyed a very reasonably priced hot meal while we watched woodpeckers and peacocks play just a few feet from us on the other side of the cafe window.

Next, we explored the Fossil Factory, complete with various types of crystal, rock and fossil. JD was most excited to find a cast of the biggest ammonite fossil found in the area, and The educational benefit of the centre was clear with plenty to learn about the natural history of the hillside.

A quick play in the playground and some time photographing the vista and Everyone was feeling tired so we started to queue for the cable car. As we neared the front, I lost my nerve again so we ambled down the hill, hopped in the car and arrived back at our apartment to slob out on well earned takeaway pizza.

All in all, a perfect trip.

Disclosure: we were given a room at Birchover Hotel Apartments and tickets to the Heights of Abraham free of charge. No payment was received for this post. All posts are 100% honest.
