Multi-purpose scissors are a must for any busy kitchen. They’re one of those pieces of equipment that we use in pretty much every task, and when something is so heavily used it’s well worth tracking down a really good product. I’ve been putting AnySharp’s scissors through their paces, with some impressive results.
The AnySharp Multi 5-in-1 Scissors (£15.99) are designed to be used around the home and for virtually any cutting task. The professional grade blades are made from tempered steel, which makes them tough, long-lasting, and razor sharp. And they are seriously sharp; I actually chopped a carrot with them as a test with ease and I’m told that can cut through chicken bones. Impressive – though definitely a reason to keep them out of reach of children!
A lot of thought has gone into the design of these scissors. Comfort, safety, practicality and performance have all been carefully considered, and there’s a range of clever little features that make them really effective.
The soft grip handles allow you to apply force without slipping or discomfort, so important when you’re using something this sharp. The handles are also larger than usual, apparently making them suitable for left or right handed use, and most hand sizes too.
The blades are curved, to keep your hands safely away from the cutting edge while also allowing you to use them at a more comfortable angle. They have a tensioning bolt, so if the blades work loose you can easily tighten them to restore perfect performance – this is the issue that sees most scissors condemned to the bin in my experience, so it’s a great feature.
On a practical level, it’s brilliant to have just one pair of scissors in the drawer that can deal with anything you need to cut. There are also tools built in around the handle that perform additional functions; you can crack nuts, crush garlic, open bottles and even strip wire. And they’re dishwasher safe too, making them truly low-maintenance.
We’ve also been trying out the AnySharp Knife Sharpener (£9.99). Keeping kitchen knives sharp not only prolongs their life, it also makes food preparation that much quicker and easier. But sharpening your kitchen knives by hand requires some skill, and can be a daunting prospect if you haven’t had lots of practice. The AnySharp sharpener makes it easy to correctly and safely sharpen almost all kitchen knives.
Safety has been carefully considered in the product’s design, which is very reassuring. The unit has a suction cup base which keeps it firmly attached to the worktop, and it’s designed to be used single-handed so you can keep your spare hand well out of the way. It’s designed to be used with only light pressure, to reduce the risk of accidents.
The AnySharp Knife Sharpener really is very easy to use; you simply draw the knife blade gently through the tungsten carbide sharpening edges three or four times, and you have a perfectly sharpened knife. It’s pre-set at the optimum sharpening angle of 20 degrees, so you can achieve professional results every time. It’s suitable for almost any knife, so Ive sharpened pretty much every knife in my kitchen, including hardened steel and serrated blades, however it isn’t suitable for fine-toothed serrated knives.
A big plus point of the AnySharp Knife Sharpener is that it’s the lightest and smallest sharpener I’ve owned, at just over 6cm high, meaning it’s easy to keep tucked away in a drawer or cupboard, so there’s no need to find a permanent spot for it on the worktop.
This a convenient, reliable little gadget that really helps to prolong the life of your knives. It’s worth noting that the AnySharp is
