When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, there’s no better choice than a specially curated selection of world and craft beers. Like every dad, each beer is unique and distinctive, making it the best way to celebrate the individuality that makes dads so special.
Beer Hawk, the UK’s leading craft beer shop, has hand-picked a selection of craft beers from around the world to create distinctive gift sets ensuring there’s something for each and every dad, whether he’s a beer aficionado or wants to expand his tastes.
So why not just grab some bottles from the supermarket? Well apparently, every beer that Beer Hawk sells is handpicked from a selection of the best artisan breweries around the globe. They stock over 500 of the world’s best beers, but only beers that pass a very stringent taste test make it into the range, so 19 out of every 20 beers that are tried don’t make it onto the website.
That sounds like some excellent quality control to me, so we went ahead and trialled the Black Belt Beer Box.
Beer Black Belt Box
This set of four beers is ideal for the dad who aspires to be a black belt in beer knowledge. Containing a wheat beer, an IPA (India pale ale), a lager and a stout, this selection is a great way to enjoy a variety of tastes and expand awareness of different beers.
The Beer Hawk Beer Black Belt Set comes with a handy booklet which contains tasting notes that make it easy to explore and understand the world of beer. It also features a chart that can be filled in after each beer has been enjoyed, to track which flavours and aromas were preferred.
These were the offerings in our delivery, and it was really great fun tasting them.
We learnt a few things too! Here’s what Mark and I thought of the selection (note: we are NOT beer experts!)
Bad Seed Brewery Espresso Stout
As a huge fan of coffee, this one got Mark’s attention immediately. As you’d expect, there’s a strong roasted bitterness to this one, with a sweet edge of dark chocolate and espresso. This is an excellent stout from the Bad Seed Brewery in Malton, North Yorkshire. This one was Mark’s favourite, and I was surprised how much I liked it, given that I’m not usually a stout fan.
This is a mild and fresh German larger that opens with a satisfying pop. It’s golden in colour and tastes refreshing, malty and moderately dry. The grains come through in the taste, which is balanced with a slight aroma of grass after summer rain. We found this one very easy to drink – it would be lovely to wash down a meal in the sunshine.
Popperings Hommel Bier
A Belgian IPA style beer brewed by Brouwerij Van Eecke N.V. in Watou, Belgium. Much stronger and more bitter than standard pale ale, which was a bit of a shock to our tastebuds. It has a deep straw colour, citrusy aroma, a powerful first taste and a clean, soft finish.
Blanche De Bruxellelles Blanche
This is a wheat beer with less fizz than its German counterparts, and flavour notes of a citrus and spice. It pours a softly cloudy yellow, like lemonade, and is definitely refreshing, being delicate rather than flat or flavourless. Again, this one would be lovely with a meal, we think.
If you fancy trying the Beer Black Belt Box for yourself, it’s available from http://www.beerhawk.co.uk/beer-black-belt for £20.
