Only 4 days to go! – my many ‘Sober for October’ friends
If you’re not already aware of the ‘Sober for October’ campaign, it’s being led by Macmillan Cancer Support and the basic premise is this:
Don’t drink throughout October and get people to sponsor you for doing so. Go Sober for October is about using the change of season to clear your head and make a difference. Get healthy, challenge yourself and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, to help ensure that no-one faces cancer alone.
You’ve probably seen it mentioned on Facebook or Twitter so now is the time to look again. It is not too late to donate!! If one of your friends is doing it, why not support them by making a donation? You should be able to find their fundraising page by searching on the Go Sober website.
The money raised will fund everything that helps make sure those with cancer don’t go through it alone. That includes the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
This kind of campaign really can make a difference. In January this year, Cancer Research UK ran a similar campaign, Dryathlon which challenged social drinkers to give up alcohol, for January, to raise money for Cancer Research UK. 35,000 ‘Dryathletes’ went 31 days dry raising over £4.2 million. That’s money that will genuinely help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured – amazing stuff.
