Check your tyres before you set off – my mum
How often do you change your tyres? How often to you check their tread? Do you change your tyres for summer and winter weather? Did you even know that different tyres are suited to different weather?
And then there are the myths…you might think that if you only drive to and from the shops and on the school run, you won’t need to replace your tyres as often as someone who does a lot of trips up and down the motorway. Actually, it’s the opposite – short journeys cause twice as much wear! And you might see a motorway trip as the highest risk time for drivers, but actually more accidents happen in urban areas and lower speeds.
There’s a lot to be learned from the way we drive, and the more tyre manufacturers can understand our driving habits, the better they can design high performance tyres that grip how and when we need it.
Michelin has launched its Road Usage Lab in a bid to do just that. By putting special monitoring equipment into 3000 cars across Europe, they’re aiming to learn more than ever before about the intricacies and hidden habits of urban driving so that they can develop their best urban tyres yet.
