Mummy, you’re ALWAYS taking photos – JD, 4
I’ve been taking photographs for all of four months now. I love it. It brings calm to my overactive brain and is the first time I’ve had a go at creating something that could almost be called arty.
Photography has helped me zoom in and appreciate the minutest of detail on my children’s faces. It’s helped me see the beauty in things I wouldn’t previously have even noticed, let alone stopped and stared at. And it’s given me a purpose beyond working or parenting.
Looking back over the years, at almost 30, I think this is my first proper ‘hobby’.
So here are my favourite snaps of 2011. They’re not about to appear in the National Portrait Gallery, or grace the walls of the Tate, but they mean a lot to me.
This one shows JD and his grandma as we walked around the parkin late summer. It was one of the last sunny days of the year, JD was delighted to be out among nature and was happily skipping along with one of his favourite people in the world. I think this pic really captures their friendship.
JD having fun again in this one – this time with Mark. It’s one of the first pictures I ever took with a digital camera and I still get a little teary when I look at it because my two men look so happy.
Little Miss J’s first photo
This one was snapped with my iPhone – the first ever pic of Little Miss J. Nuff said.
I love you
This one means a lot to me too. The first couple of weeks after Little Miss J was born were busy and stressful. We were all running round trying to get our act together to go shopping, I was getting hot and tense and then I saw this on the table – a simple note from Mark – and everything was ok.
JD the fortune teller
This is from the first proper day out we had after Little Miss J was born and I haven’t shared it before. It was taken at The Collection in Lincoln and JD was really enjoyed himself, as he always does among art and open spaces. See how cheeky he looks? That’s JD in a nutshell.
Happy end of 2011, and happy start of 2012!
