It probably comes as no surprise to learn that a worrying number of children in the UK don’t spend enough time outdoors.
According to the RSPB, only one in ten children regularly plays in wild spaces. Meanwhile, the National Trust’s ‘Natural Childhood’ report outlines several growing health problems, including Vitamin D deficiency, short-sightedness and asthma as well as reduced physical fitness and strength. In addition to the physical benefits of outdoor play, the report suggests that playing outdoors also encourages mental wellbeing and greater emotional resilience.
So with all that in mind, we’ve taken on Kozi Kid’s #maketimeforoutdoorplay challenge. Kozi Kidz is a British clothing brand with a passion for getting kids outside, whatever the weather and so the challenge involves one simple commitment: to dedicate more time to playing outdoors.
This weekend it rained just as we were about to head to the park, so we changed plans and headed into the garden instead. We watched the rain collect on leaves, we shook flowers gently to see them release the raindrops that clung to their petals, we watched dozen of spiders crawl to shelter amongst the shale, we slipped and slid, we jumped and laughed. We definitely didn’t care that it was raining.
We’ve always gone on splashy adventures – Miss J loves putting on her boots and splashing in the rain like Peppa Pig – but when you’re tired from a week of work, it’s all too easy to groan and stay indoors. This challenge is reminding us not to let bad weather stop play. We’re planning muddy forest walks and building sandcastles in the rain, because it’s definitely more fun outdoors.
So, over to you…will you join me and lots of others in trying harder to #maketimeforoutdoorplay?
What are your top tips for games to play outside when the rain is falling?
