Hands up if you have vital pics, photos and documents on your computer and/or phone that you would be devastated to lose.
A recent Seagate survey found that 66% of families have lost treasured Christmas digital photos, and only 13% of families tend to print them out. Check it out:
So where our parents used to struggle with boxes and boxes of photo albums in the attic, now the challenge is keeping up with the sheer volume of digital photos, videos and documents a family can produce. Add to that the fact that my husband and I are photographers and work from home and it’s clear that effective, secure data storage is an absolute must for us.
Of course, it’s all very well having a spare hard drive on your desk, ready to back up your data, but if it’s not easy and quick to use, it might end up being little more than an expensive paperweight.
Seagate sent us their Wireless Mobile Storage 500GB External USB Portable Hard Drive to trial, and we’ve been putting it to the test. It’s a portable hard drive with some clever features that promise to enhance its performance.
Built in wifi
A shared drive is a great idea, but if you have to have a sea of cables on the floor to keep the family connected, it’s never going to be practical. There is a USB interface on the Seagate drive, should you prefer connecting this way, but the selling point is that creates its own wi-fi network, so the whole family can connect to it wirelessly, even where there’s no internet connection – a real bonus when you’re out and about.
It’s relatively simple to set up with just a few quick steps. I got a bit stuck for a moment when the drive didn’t seem writable, but it turns out it’s because I was using a Mac. No need to reformat, thankfully, I just installed the NTFS driver Seagate provide and everything worked a charm.
It’s great to be able to access your files when you’re away from home, but lugging around weighty portable drives and connecting wires can really discourage you from doing so.
This Seagate drive is compact (smaller than an outstretched hand) and lightweight (just 281g) but still reassuringly robust. It has so far withstood the rigours of a day in my rucksack, although I wouldn’t want to risk dropping it.
It’s also battery powered, with a life of up to six hours and since you’re unlikely to need it on continuously when out and about, it should last all day, and did so during our tests.
Large storage capacity
Those family photos, videos, music and other files can quickly add up, so it makes sense to go for a hard drive with plenty of capacity.
The Seagate delivers a healthy 500GB of storage – plenty for typical family usage.
Easy media streaming
Download the free Seagate Media App and you can connect up smartphones, tablets and computers – perfect for a busy household.
The Seagate drive offers the option to then wirelessly stream stored media and files across up to three mobile devices at the same time. I guess this means in theory you could all watch the different movies on your smartphones, streamed off the drive to users in different rooms in the house.
We haven’t tried anything that intensive with the drive, but we have used it to share and stream clips from the kids’ nativity performances and it worked well.
Backup from mobile devices
We all do it: fill up our smartphones and tablets with photos and videos, then run out of capacity at exactly the wrong moment.
You can use the Seagate Media App on your phone/tablet to transfer files directly to the Seagate drive without the need for a computer to act as the middle man. This is a very clever feature and I’ve found it makes it far simpler to free up space on my other devices as and when, instead of waiting until I’m at my computer.
Overall, the Seagate is a good little device. The RRP of around £79.99 is very reasonable, and with the wireless feature, portability and mobile connectivity, it’s a good purchase to give your family extra storage space and peace of mind in a compact, straightforward package.
