How do you decide which to go for when treating yourself to a luxury bathroom product you haven’t tried before?
Heritage Bathrooms are on a quest to uncover the very best in luxury hair, body and relaxation products. And I bravely took on the challenge to become one of the testers of a range of gorgeous products, to help decide which will get the crown.
Davines Authentic Moisturising Balm
Beauty products that multi-task really earn their space on the bathroom shelf, and this three-in-one balm is a brilliant example. It works as a hair conditioner, makeup remover and rinse-off body moisturiser, making it a perfect on-the-go product. The ingredients are impressively natural and antioxidant-rich too, with shea butter and organic jojoba, sunflower, sesame and carthame oils.
I used it to get my split ends though the fortnight until my hair appointment and it made a huge difference.
Moa Fortifying Green Bath Potion
If you need a bit of a reboot after a tough day, this vibrant green bath potion is up to the task. It’s packed with natural essential oils; peppermint to refresh, fennel to detoxify, fir needle to relax, and sweet birch to ease aching muscles.
I love the complete absence of chemical ingredients and the fact that it’s suitable for sensitive skin. It literally is a bottled way to clear your mind, but it’s a little too minty for me.
Elemis British Botanical Body Cream
If you like your body cream rich and packed with essential oils, this is a great option. Lavender, chamomile, geranium and palmarosa oils are blended with conditioning milk proteins and omega-rich echium oil, to create a luxurious cream which nourishes, hydrates and soothes the skin.
It smells gorgeous – it reminds me of spa treatments – and glides onto the skin, leaving it feeling wonderfully soft and with a subtle silky sheen. This was my favourite product in the trial.
Co Bigelow Body Lotion
This body lotion was originally made exclusively for the hotel industry, but it was such a hit the company had to make it available to consumers too. It’s easy to see why it was so popular; it smells divine, glides on effortlessly without feeling greasy, and sinks in fast although there is a tiny bit of stickiness for the first few minutes.
It feels like it really nourishes your skin, leaving it feeling firm and smooth and there’s only a faint, fresh scent once it’s sunken in that’s really lovely.
Dr Bragi Marine Enzyme Intensive Treatment Mask
This fabric mask is great for skin that’s stressed, sensitised or feeling a little fragile. It contains patented marine enzymes which, when subjected to body temperature, become ‘super-active’ and deliver a powerful home facial that targets redness, dehydration, loss of firmness and signs of premature ageing.
I felt slightly ridiculous sitting with a giant wet wipe with holes in it draped over my face, and after 10 minutes it started to sting a little to I took it off and wiped off the excess oil as directed. I needn’t have worried. My skin felt smoother, brighter and really hydrated – I looked like I’d bene to a spa. This is a great product for quickly giving your skin a noticeable boost.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Aromatic Foaming Bath
This is so good for a relaxing end-of-the-day soak. The aromatherapy blend of lavender, spanish marjoram and geranium essential oils has you unwinding as soon as you step into the bath, and the conditioning herbal infusion is a treat for your skin too.
The thick liquid doesn’t bubble all that much, but it left my skin smelling incredible.
Royal Horticultural Society Wax Lyrical Classic Rose Fragranced Candle
Fragranced candles are brilliant for creating a relaxing mood in the bathroom, and this classic rose candle transports you to a Summer garden in full bloom. There’s a touch of gardenia in there to round out the fragrance, which is strong enough to fill the room without being overpowering.
Charles Worthington, London Moisture Seal Mineral Hair Rescue Masque
This hair masque is designed for dry hair, and aims to restore moisture and softness by balancing key oils and proteins. It’s enriched with argan oil and marine minerals, and fragranced with citrus and white floral scents. It did a great job of detangling and smoothing my hair, and gave it a really luxurious finish without making it look too heavy.
Sanctuary Spa Covent Garden Cleanse 5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask
This mask is designed to offer deep cleansing in super-quick time. It’s a self-heating mask, so once applied it warms up to open pores, allowing charcoal and kaolin clay to draw out impurities from the skin. There’s also myrrh essential oil to soothe and calm, although it hardly smells of anything at all.
It’s a pleasant feeling as it heats up on your skin as you massage it in, then you just need to relax for 5 minutes before rinsing off. It left my skin feeling pretty clean, but not more than a good cleanser would. On reflection, I felt the heat passed incredibly quickly and wonder if I was using too much product or too little water.
Balance Me Revitalising Hand and Body Lotion
A combined hand and body lotion is a convenient way to keep your skin’s moisture levels topped up. This product is 99% natural and contains organic shea butter, essential oils and aloe vera to soothe, strengthen and hydrate skin throughout the day.
This isn’t the thin lotion you find in hotel bathrooms. It’s thickand a little goes a long way. It sinks into the skin quickly, leaving an unusually foodie citrus scent and although it did sooth my hands, wasn’t quite as effective as the other brands I trialled for this feature.
Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask
Sometimes hair needs a real boost, and this does the job in five minutes. It’s rich and creamy, and infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil to hydrate and condition. My hair felt smoother, easier to style and generally more manageable after using this; it had an amazing shine too. It didn’t do much for the split ends I had been harbouring, though., so it’s more of a revive product than a rescue one.
System Professional Repair Mask Deep Hair Strengthener
If your hair is very damaged, this mask is an intense treatment which nourishes and repairs, whilst also protecting the hair fibre. By improving smoothness and manageability it helps prevent further damage from styling tools. It’s suitable for chemically-treated hair, and even one application makes a real difference.
My mum tested this one (a girl can only put so many products on her hair!) and said it left her hair feeling glossy and manageable.
REN Clean Skincare Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask
This face mask promises to remove dead skin cells, combat congested pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines and reveal more radiant skin. It contains a blend of acids sourced from fruit extracts and Omega 3 and 7 to nourish and soothe the skin.
The mask stays on for 10 minutes, after which time you gently remove it with a damp cloth and rinse your skin with warm water. I noticed a slight tingling during application and realised it’s not recommended for sensitive skin so I wiped it off early to be on the safe side, which probably didn’t really give it time to do anything impressive.
Korres Repairing Hair Mask – Sunflower and Mountain Tea
Coloured hair needs extra care, and this mask works hard to protect your colour while also delivering a hit of moisture. Sunflower and mountain tea are both rich in polyphenols, which counteract the dulling effect of shampooing, styling and sun exposure. The promised result is longer-lasting colour and nourished, healthy-looking hair.
My mum has highlights in her hair, so she used this while on holiday and said that the blondes kept their tone well – result!
REN Clean Skincare Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil
Rose oil has soothing and stress-relieving properties, so it’s perfect for a bath oil. This decadent oil nourishes, reduces inflammation and eases away tension, and it left my skin supple and delicately fragranced. It doesn’t leave an oily residue on the bath either, so it’s a great product all round.
Sanctuary Spa Covent Garden Luxury Bath Float
If you like your bath bubbly, this bath float is the perfect indulgence. It has the trademark Sanctuary Spa fragrance which is warm and sensuous, and is packed with moisturising ingredients that give your skin a silky-smooth feel. You only need a little to produce a mass of bubbles, so it’s long-lasting too. Brilliant.
The White Company Limited Edition White Rose Candle
This is rose scent with a difference; it’s a blend of white tea roses, white lilies, white lilac, bergamot and amber. It smells beautifully fresh, and the chic glass design complements it perfectly. A real luxury and perfect for the lounge.
Anne Semonin Paris The Daily Musts
My skin has different needs depending on what I’ve been exposing it to, and this pack of four face masks is a convenient way to always have the right treatment to hand. Each one supplies the nutrients needed to maintain skin’s balance and protect against premature ageing. The Mineral Mask is great for congested, dull skin, the Cream Mask comforts dry, sensitive skin, the Exfoliating Mask delivers deep but gentle exfoliation, and the Gel Mask is an instant pick-me-up for tired skin. The handy mini-pot format is ideal for when you’re travelling too.
I used the exfoliating mask the night before a shoot and my make up artist immediately commented on how smooth and even my skin was. I’ll be buying this one again.
Lily-Flame The Secret Garden (Through Twilight’s Haze) Scented Candle
As the name suggests, this scented candle conjures up the fragrances of the garden with it’s soft, floral blend. It’s a fresh but gentle scent which I can’t say I really liked when I first opened the tin, but it is quite relaxing and more subtle as it burns.
