*gasp* there’s actually choice! – me
As a vegetarian who often needs to avoid eggs and dairy, pre-packed sandwich shops are the devil. There are loads and loads of people who are intolerant to eggs or dairy out there, so they must share in my pain, right?
Too often I scoot with 3 minutes to spare into a supermarket or cafe in between meetings only to leave disappointed. It’s hard enough to figure out what’s vegetarian. No V? Hmm, nothing in the ingredients…ohhh, there’s a tiny ‘suitable for vegetarians’ mark just there, hurrah…but which contain dairy?
In most shops, when I do find veggie options, they are all either cheese-based or full of yoghurt/mayo dressing. But then…a moment of hope…an option that isn’t obviously dairy! But no, peering at the label reveals the words ‘contains cow’s milk’ in teeny tiny writing on the back. Disappointment.
Now, of course, I could take a packed lunch or, failing that, I could walk to a deli and have them make something up, but when I barely manage to get out the house on time, work all morning without a loo break and have 3 minutes to spare to grab lunch, I just want to grab something easy and not be left on the prepacked shelf, y’know?
I have found only ONE high street food chain that offers a range of well-labelled, healthy and above all, tasty veggie and vegan options: Pret A Manger.
Pret labels all their food on the actual shelf. A little tick with ‘vegan’ or ‘vegetarian’ on it makes life so much easier. Better still, they have more than one vegan option: a salad AND a sandwich, last time I checked. A vegan CHOICE on the high street!? *faints*
And both those vegan options are lovely – full of good things like fresh salad and veg, seeds, grains.
Why don’t other sandwich/coffee outlets follow suit?
