Believe the impossible…discover the incredible – Journey 2
When a film has a PG rating, it’s always tough to decide if the peril will be too perilous or the language too colourful for younger children. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island sits pretty much bang in the middle of that grey area.
The central characters land on the Mysterious Island via a dramatic helicopter crash and soon after they’re on the run from a giant angry lizard. Later they’re chased by a hungry bird and towards the end they narrowly escape drowning.
But no one really gets hurt. There’s no blood. There’s no gore. It’s scary, but not terrifying.
Loosely based on Jules Verne’s novel The Mysterious Island, the plot is straightforward, there are no surprises, but there’s excitement and plenty of colourful moments of wonder.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens put in solid, simple performances and Luiz Guzman and Michael Caine add a welcome element of humour throughout.
A fun film for those children with a slightly braver disposition.
