It really feels like the run-up to Christmas has started in earnest now. The advent calendars are in full swing, the decorations are up, and the pace of life has definitely stepped up a notch. This time of year is always hectic, as our to-do lists swell with Christmas parties, school plays, present shopping, food prep and more. Add to that the kids’ inevitable growing excitement, and things can get more than a little frantic at home.
Of course, we all enjoy building up to the big day, and the excitement is absolutely part of the fun, but I also like to make sure we grab some relaxed family time here and there. It helps to keep everyone on an even keel, as well as recharging the batteries for the next festive event on the calendar. For those family downtime moments we’re finding DisneyLife a great option.
DisneyLife gives you all your favourite Disney movies, box sets, music, e-books, and more, all in one place for just £4.99 a month. It’s available on iOS, Amazon and Android, and with the ability to add up to ten compatible devices the whole family can easily access their own content. We’ve been using DisneyLife throughout this year and it’s been brilliant; the kids use it regularly to watch their favourite shows and movies, and we often read a book together or have a good old sing-along.
We’re loving the seasonal content at the moment too; there’s a really fabulous selection of Christmas-themed movies, albums, shows and stories to choose from, and a daily Christmas calendar appears on DisneyLife every day at 4pm .
One of my favourite things to do with the kids is to share a book, and at this time of year, snuggling up together with a Christmas story is a great way for us all to unwind. Disney stories are always a huge hit with the kids, and DisneyLife has made it really easy for us to discover some new Christmassy tales featuring some well-loved characters. Lots of the stories have a read-along option, which makes them perfect for early readers or for sharing as a family.
If you’re looking for some festive reading inspiration, here are our top 5 Disney stories to get you in the mood for Christmas.
Toy Story: Christmas Toys
It’s almost Christmas in Andy’s house. Andy has gone on a trip without his toys and Woody is feeling sad, so Buzz and the gang create a toy version of Christmas to cheer him up.
The familiar theme of friendship, which features in all the Toy Story films, is front and centre in this story as expected, plus lots of detail on Christmas traditions, which we love. There’s a warm and fuzzy feel-good ending too.
Sofia the First: Holiday in Enchancia
Miss J is a big fan of Sofia the First, and this festive story has all of her favourite characters, plus a good dose of adventure and a dash of Christmas sparkle.
When a snowstorm stops King Roland getting home in time for the holidays, Sofia leads her family on an expedition to find him.The illustrations are really beautiful, and there’s even a special appearance by Princess Aurora to help Sofia save the day.
Pooh Goes Sledding
This gentle story featuring the much-loved characters from Hundred Acre Wood is perfect for young children. On a snowy winter morning, Pooh and his friends go sledding, but Piglet can’t quite get the hang of it.
The friends pitch in with ideas to help him and with a bit of teamwork, everyone ends up having fun together. Reading this is the book equivalent of a nice big Christmas hug.
Phineas and Ferb: Christmas Vacation
On Christmas Eve, Phineas and Ferb discover that evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz has created the Naughty-inator, which means all the kids in Danville are on Santa’s naughty list. Will they manage to convince Santa’s elves that it’s a big mistake and save Christmas?
With all the usual humour and slightly surreal tone of Phineas and Ferb, this is a great Christmas story option for older readers.
A Mickey Mouse Christmas Collection Story: Mickey’s Christmas Carol
At Christmas you can’t get much more traditional than the story of Scrooge, and this Mickey Mouse version brings the traditional tale to a young audience perfectly. My children’s imaginations were completely captured by this story, and after being desperate for Scrooge to see the error of his ways the first time we read it together, they’ve since been acting it out – great fun!
I love the old-school Disney illustrations too. This is a longer story which is great for more experienced readers, but there’s a read-along option as well.
So they’re our picks, and there are more to find on the DisneyLife app. Isn’t it great?
As well as being brilliant for keeping us all entertained with our favourite books over Christmas, DisneyLife is perfect for those inevitable festive car journeys. We’re visiting relatives over the holidays, and DisneyLife is a great boredom-buster on long trips.
Before we set off, the kids choose their favourite stories and we download them onto the DisneyLife app. Because you can add multiple devices, it’s easy to keep everyone entertained with their own personal selection. And it helps us travel light too, which is more important than ever when the car is full of presents!
