One more packet of crisps won’t hurt, will it? – Me
In amongst the emergency nappies and crumpled tissues, the empty glasses case and the well-used iPhone, the plentiful crumbs and the almost-empty make up tubes, there used to lay fatty, sugary snacks: crisps, chocolate, you get the picture.
Wherever I go with the kids, we always seem to be out for at least an hour longer than we intend. Not long enough to justify eating lunch/dinner out, but long enough for everyone to get tired, grumpy and hungry. Where would we be without snacks?
Well the answer for me is thinner and healthier (JD much less so as I already tend to have a few healthy choices for him up my sleeve). I run around a lot, I feel like I need the calories and perhaps I do, but not in a form devoid of any other nutritional benefits.
So here, after many research hours spent munching, crunching and taste tasting, I bring you my top ten favourite healthy handbag snacks.
Hale & Hearty Pure Oat Flapjack Supersnack (£2.95 per pack of five – 165 calories per bar): individually wrapped, chewy, crunchy flapjacks with a sprinkling of sunflower seeds and sweet raisins, these bars are delicious, satisfying and dairy free but need to be eaten in moderation as each slice contains 9.1g of fat.
Sweet Chilli Wonderful Pistachios (1.99 per 150g bag – 171 calories per 30g portion): these sweet, hot Californian pistachios are soooo tasty and bear a lot of health benefits, but they’re obviously not low in fat, so you’ll need to resist the urge to eat the whole bag at once.
Superbly Spiced Cassava Crisps (68p per 30g bag – 136 calories per bag): crunchy and fresh-tasting, I would go so far as to say that these crisps made with a tropical root vegetable and flavoured with chilli and paprika are actually nicer than any potato crisps I’ve ever tasted.
Plain Sakata Authentic Rice Crackers (£1.99 per 100g pack – 120 calories per 30g portion): these 97% fat-free rice crackers, seasoned with a salty soy glaze, are really moreish. They also come in a whole range of other flavours including BBQ, sour cream and tomato and balsamic.
Yu! bars (£1.79 for a pack of three – about 130 calories per bar): cereal and fruit bars covered in yoghurt, they come in a variety of flavours including wild berry, strawberry, apricot or cherry. These bars are not just tasty, they’re sweet, chewy and perfect for a snack.
Squeeze & Stir (59p per sachet – 76 to 144 calories per sachet): these sachets of soup (available in cream of tomato, tomato and basil, minestrone and mediterranean vegetable) are concentrated purees, so mixing with a mug of hot water gives you a fairly fresh tasting, low fat mug without any horrible lumps of powder at the bottom.
Beyond Dark (95p per 35g bag – 189 calories per bag): billed as ‘healthy chocolate’, these tiny drops of very dark (70%) chocolate melt in the mouth and are packed with antioxidants, so while they’re not something to eat all the time, they’re definitely healthier than a Mars Bar.
Choccy Munchy Seeds with Apricot (£1.50 per 50g bag – 219 calories per bag): mixed seeds and dried apricot, coated in Belgian chocolate. This snack isn’t low in fat, but it is tasty, filling and full of goodness; plus it’s free of gluten, cholesterol and artificial colours and flavourings.
Graze Light Box (£3.79 per box – 54 to 146 calories per box): a slightly different choice here, these pre-packed box of snacks can be delivered to your door daily by graze.com, and contain a selection of dried fruit, crackers, olive, bread, dips and chocolate. Nom.
PROPERCORN (95p per 30g bag – around 100 calories per bag): naturally flavoured popcorn in a variety of flavours including Worcester Sauce & sun dried tomato, sweet & salty, sour cream & chive (my favourite), and lightly sea salted – all much nicer and healthier than the cinema alternative.
So that’s it – ten great snacks that aren’t totally unhealthy :) Your can also read a similar round up of healthy kids snacks, tried and tested by JD.
