*shouting from upstairs* I can’t find clean pants! – JD, 6
The Hotpoint WMUD962P Washing Machine in White has a fairly generous 9kg capacity and a very decent 1600rpm spin speed. We chose it because it’s from a reputable brand, got a pretty positive review from Which?, and because it has all the key features we need as a busy family, such as variable temperature and spin speed settings, delayed start and an anti-stain cycle to put some extra welly into washing problem stains.
It washes well (clearly an important factor!) and has a great range of programmes, 16 in all, including a standard 80 minute cycle and a speedy 30 minute quick wash. There are also special cycles for towels, delicates, and even one to reduce creases – I have no idea how this works but it really does seem to!
I know that it’s recommended you never leave a washing machine running when you’re not in the house, so the digital display is really handy when I’m trying to figure out if I can afford to wait for a load to finish before heading out on the school run, and the pause function is useful when I realise I can’t!
The detergent drawer looks funky and is easy to fill, although it is a little fiddly to remove for cleaning.
We like to minimise our energy use so we’re pleased with the machine’s A++ energy efficiency which is bolstered by an eco wash cycle option. It’s not the quietest machine in the world, so it probably wouldn’t be the best choice for someone in a studio flat, but in our kitchen it’s still quieter than our old machine.
If you buy from Argos, the machine is currently reduced from £519.99 to £389.99 (a saving of 25%) and comes with free delivery and a 5 year parts and 1 year labour guarantee.
Update Jan 2015: we continue to be really happy with this machine. It stopped turning on a couple of months ago and we had to call an engineer out, which meant a couple of days wait and a replacement motherboard, but cost us nothing as it was under warranty. A week later, it broke again, which turned out to be something to do with an incompatible motherboard. Third time lucky and we haven’t had any issues since.
In total, we were without a washing machine for about 8 days, which could be worse, and apart from that, it’s performed brilliantly under continued heavy use (although not 16 loads a day!) We have taken out extended labour cover now for just a few pounds a month, so that if anything else goes wrong in the future, we’ll still have no parts or labour charges to pay.
Overall, a year on, we’d still recommend the Hotpoint WMUD962P Washing Machine.
We were sent the machine to review.
