Chocolate orange bars

Chocolate and orange – a match made in heaven. These little cake bars are zingy, satisfying and delicious with a cuppa.

For the sponge:

  • 200 g caster sugar
  • 150 g slightly salted butter softened, plus a little more for greasing
  • 2 large free range eggs
  • 200 g self raising flour
  • 1/2 tsp orange food colouring gel
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • 100 g dark chocolate chips

For the frosting:

  • 125 g butter softened
  • 375 g icing sugar
  • 25 g cocoa
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • 2 tbsp milk


  • Preheat the oven to 200C (180C fan assisted, 400F).
  • Beat the sugar and butter together until creamy.
  • Beat the eggs with the colouring and flavouring.
  • Add the egg mix slowly to the butter/sugar mix while beating briskly.
  • Fold in the flour until fully combined.
  • Transfer the batter into the greased 12″ x 9″ greaseproof baking tray and level off.
  • Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.
  • Bake for 12-15 mins until firm in the center.
  • Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely.
  • Beat the frosting ingredients together until light and fluffy.
  • Spread on top of the cake, then work a ripple pattern into the surface with a fork.
  • Leave to set for 15 minutes, then cut into bars with a sharp knife.
