This simple yet delicious bread and butter pudding with jam is made rich and gooey with just a handful of simple ingredients to produce a sweet, creamy, custardy dessert the whole family will love.

Finished bowl of Bread and butter pudding with jam with a spoon on the side.

It's a perfect dessert to whip up in a flash, since it's made with ingredients you probably already have at home. All you'll need is stale white bread, butter, milk, cream, eggs, sugar and a few dollops of your favourite jam!

To prepare the dish, you'll simply grease a tin with butter, whisk the wet ingredients together to make a simple custard, dip the bread into the custard and then pile them into the tin, with a little jam spread between each layer. 25 minutes in the oven is all this beautiful bread and butter pudding needs to turn golden and delicious, with a crisp top and gooey, creamy underneath.

Jay, my 10 year old, made this gorgeous dessert all by herself, taking guidance from Carrot Kitchen, a fantastic app available on Android or iOS, which is designed to help kids acquire lifelong cooking skills and achieve independence in the kitchen.

It's a strikingly high-quality tool, with exceptional recipes and excellent video content that is friendly and clear, but never patronising or over-simplified.

Whether you want to help broaden the eating habits of a picky eater, empower your kids to take on a more active role in the kitchen, or simply enjoy time cooking together, Carrot Kitchen fits the bill.

The app currently has over 100 kid-friendly recipes - all developed by food education experts with the valuable input of kids themselves - and new recipes are added every month.

Once signed up to the app, children begin by cooking from a set of simpler recipes to develop core skills, gradually gaining access to more advanced recipes, allowing them to further enhance their skills and develop a healthy approach to food, all whilst having fun in the kitchen and enjoying a range of sweet and savoury treats.

A subscription to Carrot Kitchen costs as little as just £2.83 a month, but I have an exclusive offer that means you claim 30 days FREE ACCESS!

There are a host of clever features to make the recipes clear and easy to follow. At the start of each recipe, there's a button to email a list of ingredients to parents and there's also a video taking kids through all the equipment they'll need to gather before getting started.

When it comes to preparing the recipe, there's a short video for every single step of the process, demonstrated by kids with an adult voice over.

Screenshot from the Carrot Kitchen mobile application.

There are also optional extra videos for special skills such as "How to measure ingredients" and "How to use an oven". When it's time to use the oven, the app even provides a timer, and while the recipe bakes, the app guides kids through tidying and washing up. There are even videos teaching kids "How to fill a dishwasher" or "How to wash dishes by hand".

When children have completed their dish, the app invites them to upload a photo to record their progress, although this is optional, and then awards them progress points, as well as sometimes unlocking trickier recipes to try next.
