With the sun out, the kids want ice-cold drinks, so we treated ourselves to this super tasty, super quick to make, utterly delicious (but definitely not for an everyday) treat: Oreo milkshakes!

Two large milkshake glasses filled with oreo milkshake. In the background there are some additional oreos scattered around.

This Oreo milkshake is perfect for Oreo fans because it has a very distinctive Oreo flavour.

    You're going to love it.

    Here's what to do.

    Ingredients

    • 200 g (½ pint) vanilla ice cream
    • 1 litre (4 cups) whole milk
    • 14 Oreo cookies 150g / 5.5oz + 3 to garnish
    • squirty cream
    • 10 g chocolate

    Equipment

    • Weighing scales
    • Measuring jug
    • Jug blender
    • Grater

    Instructions

Put the ice cream, milk and Oreos into a blender

    Blend until smooth

Over head shot of the blender after the oreo milkshake ingredients have been blended together.

    Pour into glasses.

Oreo milkshake ingredients having been blended poured into large milkshake glasses on a light blue background.

Add lots of squirty cream and garnish with half an Oreo each.

Two oreo milkshakes topped with squirty cream and half an oreo on a blue background. On the blue background there's also additional oreo cookies.

Finely grate the chocolate over the top and enjoy!

    Easy!

    And that's it!

Drink it fast...the Oreo dust floats to the top eventually, creating a thicker, more biscuity top layer, although that's no bad thing!

    What do you think?

Some advice for making a delicious milkshake every time.

What other biscuits or cookies can I use for my milkshake?

Hand holding an oreo milkshake with an additional milkshake in the background on a light blue table. At the bottom of the image there's some text describing the image for Pinterest.

Almost any biscuit/or cookie will work in this milkshake recipe, as long as it's dry enough. You will have trouble breaking up a chewy cookie in a milkshake without large lumps remaining or the texture seeming soggy.

I think party rings and bourbon biscuits work especially well.

A larger diameter straw is recommended if going to a thick milkshake, as it can help to make sure nothing gets in the straw while drinking.

    Is this milkshake gluten-free?

Two oreo milkshakes on a light blue table covered in oreos. At the top of the image there's some text describing the image for Pinterest.

The cookies in this Oreo milkshake aren't gluten-free, but there are other similar brands that are which you could use instead.

Make sure the ice cream and chocolate is clearly labelled gluten-free too, as some can contain gluten.

Can I make this milkshake vegan?

A hand holding an oreo milkshake topped with whipped cream and an oreo cookie. There's an additional milkshake and some oreo cookies on the light blue table in the background. At the top of the image there's some text describing the image for Pinterest.

You can replace the milk with soya milk or thin coconut milk (often labelled coconut drink), swap the ice cream for vegan ice cream, the cream for vegan cream (or leave it out) and the chocolate for dairy-free chocolate. At the time of writing Oreos are suitable for vegans.

    Are milkshakes healthy?

These milkshakes contain sugar and fat so they are not the healthiest of drinks.

It is best to save them for an occasional treat, and of course, always consult your health professional if unsure.

Can I refrigerate my milkshake and drink it later?

Two oreo milkshakes sit on a light blue table surrounded by oreo cookies. At the top of the image there's some teal text describing the image for Pinterest.

These Oreo milkshakes are best enjoyed immediately.

If you have some leftover, put it in the fridge in a sealed container without the toppings as soon as it's made. As this milkshake contains dairy products, it's not good food safety practice to leave it out at room temp as it may spoil.

One safely stored in the refrigerator, your milkshake should last for a day or so. Be sure to shake well before serving.

Will milkshakes help to soothe a sore throat?

A hand holding an oreo milkshake topped with whipped cream and oreo cookies with a black and white striped paper straw. In the background there's some additional oreo cookies and another oreo milkshake. In the top right corner there's some text describing the image for Pinterest.

While many people may prefer a lozenge or saltwater gargle too soothe a sore throat, a cool milkshake can make for a lovely treat to cheer up a poorly head.

If throat is too sore to chew normal food and you're after a quick pick me up with some temporary relief from the red hot soreness in your throat, then this Oreo milkshake would be welcome.

Do contact your health professional if you're at all worried.

    When were milkshakes invented?

Three images show the process of making an oreo milkshake. At the top of the image there's some text describing the image for Pinterest.

When the term milkshake was first used in print in 1885, milkshakes were seen as an alcoholic drink that included whiskey!

However, by the turn of the century, milkshakes were becoming popular in the US and by the 1950s they were firmly entrenched in American culture.

Hi, as far as I am aware, most of the world use the metric system of ml and grams. Apparently, just Burma, Liberia, and the US have not adopted the International System of Units (SI, or metric system) as their official system of weights and measures.

If it helps, you can easily convert ml and grams to fl oz and oz. Just click the converter on the recipe card. Thanks!

This looks so yummy. I used to have an oreo shake from Dennys in NEW ZEALAND and I'm yet to find the perfect replica. We will have to try this.

So simple but looks really good! A blender is vital in this weather. I still can't quite get it to do crushed ice though.
