    Red velvet waffle recipe

    This is a seriously decadent red velvet waffle recipe! A classic breakfast waffle batter is enriched with cocoa, sweetened and served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

    Making waffle batter is actually really simple. You just have one bowl for wet ingredients, one bowl for dry and then bring them together.

    For these red velvet waffles, you'll start by whisking milk, eggs, vanilla, sugar and melted butter together. Then, you'll sift cocoa and flour into a second bowl and then pour in the egg mixture and whisk together to form a batter. A dash of red food colouring gives these waffles that classic deep red shade.

    After that, all you have to do is ladle the batter into your waffle iron and cook it to perfection. I highly recommend serving your waffles with whipped cream and chocolate sauce for the ultimate red velvet breakfast!

    Here's my full red velvet waffle recipe, complete with plenty of step-by-step photographs to help you along the way.

    Ingredients

    For the red velvet waffle batter

    • 125 g (9 tbsp) slightly salted butter melted
    • 420 ml (1¾ cups) milk room temp
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 80 g (⅓ cup + 2 tbsp) white caster sugar (superfine sugar)
    • 3 medium free range eggs room temp room temp
    • A few drops red food colouring
    • 300 g (2¼ cups) white self-raising flour (self rising flour) self rising flour
    • 25 g (¼ cup) cocoa powder (dutch processed)

    To decorate

    • Squirty cream
    • Chocolate sauce

    Equipment

    • Weighing scales
    • Measuring spoons
    • Mixing bowl
    • Whisk
    • Ladle
    • Waffle iron

    Instructions

    Preheat your waffle maker or waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    Measure the milk, eggs, vanilla, sugar and melted butter into a bowl.

    Whisk together.

    In a second bowl, sift in the flour and cocoa.

    Whisk together.

    Pour the egg mixture into the bowl with the flour and cocoa.

    Whisk together.

    Add the red food colouring.

    Whisk and add more colour as necessary to get a deep red colour.

    Ladle the batter into your waffle maker or waffle iron. Take care not to overfill as the mixture will expand as it cooks. As a guide, the recipe makes 8 waffles.

    Cook until set. In my waffle maker, they took 3-4 minutes to achieve a crisp outer and fluffy inner.

    Stack the waffles onto plates and top with squirty cream and drizzle with chocolate sauce to serve.
