For little ones who love a food fright – why not try these spooky Halloween rice cakes, decorated with blackberries & grapes to look like spiders on a spider's web?

Halloween rice cakes, decorated with blackberries & grapes to look like spiders on a spider's web.

This Halloween recipe is one of our favourites and is easy to make, so the kids can get involved too.

Devised by the Organix team, they're rice cakes and fresh fruit, so they're a junk free Halloween treat for children aged 7 months and up. This recipe makes three spiders and one spider’s web.

Here's how to make this fun Halloween recipe:

Ingredients

  • 3 Organix raspberry and blueberry rice cakes
  • 4 blackberries
  • 3 black grapes
A board with rice cakes, grapes and blackberries; all the ingredients you need to make Halloween rice cakes

Instructions

Crush two blackberries in a small bowl with the back of a fork, cut the other two blackberries in half. Use a clean paintbrush to paint a spider’s web with the juice on a white plate. Older children will love to help!

Place three rice cakes on to the web, then add a half blackberry spider body on top of each rice cake.

Slice each grape in half from top to bottom, then slice each half into four thin spider legs.

Add the legs to your spiders, then eat them up before they scurry away!

Pointers, tricks and troubleshooting tips for spooktacular spiders

Are Halloween rice cakes easy to make?

Yes, this recipe is super simple and easy to make. With just a small amount of chopping for the fruit. Probably best for the adult to prepare the fruit, but the plate decorating and putting the spiders together can be done by the kids with a bit of help.

It's a great recipe for all ages and fun to do together, the older ones can paint the webs, and smaller ones can build the spiders, counting the legs as you go!

Will I need any special equipment for this recipe?

No, you won't need any special equipment, just standard things you'd expect to find in a home kitchen. The full list is on the recipe card below, but the essentials are: a chopping board, knife, plate, and clean paint brush.

Where can I buy Organix rice cakes?

Organix rice cakes are stocked in most large super markets and can be found usually on the baby essentials aisle and sometimes with the snacks and crisps. If you can't find Organix rice cakes you can of course substitute it for another other brand of a comparable size.

Are these Halloween rice cakes suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

This recipe does not contain any meat or dairy products, so if you're using the Organix raspberry and blueberry rice cakes, then these spooky spiders are suitable vegan and vegetarian. It's always double check the packaging to make sure if using a rice cake with extras in them.

Is this Halloween rice cake recipe gluten-free?

Yes, this recipe is gluten free if you use the Organix rice cakes, but do make sure to check the label just in case.

Is this Halloween rice cake recipe healthy?

These spooky spiders are a lovely, playful way for the kids to enjoy some fresh fruit and take a break from other, more sugary treats.

Are these Halloween rice cakes suitable for babies and toddlers?

One of the great things about this recipe is it can be enjoyed by all the family from 7 months up. For younger ones do make sure the grapes and blackberries are cut in half first.

The NHS has some excellent advice for feeding babies and small children.

This website does not offer medical advice: always consult your health professional if you have any concerns.

What goes well with these Halloween rice cakes?

As these rice cake spiders are so simple to make they are a great addition to any Halloween party spread and will sit fantastically alongside some scary spider web cupcakes and gory Halloween cupcakes.

Can I make this recipe without blackberries?

If you can't find fresh blackberries, check in the freezer section as frozen blackberries will work just fine too. Grab what you need out of the freezer about an hour before making so they have time to defrost. Frozen blackberries will be wetter than fresh, but that will just add to the gore.

You can also use fresh raspberries if you prefer, this will create ghoulish red spiders instead.

How should I store these Halloween rice cakes?

These Halloween rice cakes can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. However, the rice cakes will go soggy if decorated, so I would recommend making these just before you're ready to serve.

How long does this recipe keep?

If you have any left over it would be best to separate the fruit from the rice cakes and keep both in the fridge, but separate, and have as a snack within a couple of days.

Can I leave these Halloween rice cakes out on the counter?

The fresh fruits are best stored in the fridge. I would recommend keeping the fruit in the fridge until you're ready to make and serve. These Halloween rice cakes should be stored in the fridge after the party.

Can I make this Halloween rice cake recipe ahead?

You can prepare the fruit the in the morning if you know you'll be pushed for time with trick or treating, and the plates could be decorated with spider webs too. Leave the building of spiders until you're ready to serve.

It's great to have the fruit prepared in advance then the kids can get on with making almost by themselves. Cut up the fruit and mash the blackberries, and store in an airtight containers in the fridge.

Can I keep Halloween rice cakes in the refrigerator?

Yes, these Halloween spiders can be stored in the refrigerator. Cover the plate with cling-film or a beeswax wrap if you want to keep the spiders intact. Or transfer into an airtight container. They will keep for a day in the fridge, however the rice cakes will go stale and soggy quite quickly.

Can I make a different quantity of Halloween rice cakes?

You can alter this recipe to make more or fewer rice cakes easily.

To do so, simply scroll down to the recipe card found at the bottom of this page and click or hover over the servings number. A slider will appear that you can use to adjust the serving number, which will also automatically adjust all the ingredient quantities you need.

How can I change the flavours of these Halloween rice cakes?

You can play around with different flavour rice cakes and fruit combos. Get creative and make other ghoulish shapes, give some of these ideas a go.

  • Why not try the apple flavour Organix rice cakes with green grapes for legs and slices of kiwi for the topper gruesome green spiders.
  • Or how about giving cut up gooseberries a go for the topper to create sour trick or treat spiders!
  • Use a kiwi or berry slice as the iris for a monster's eye, then finish it with few veins on the cracker painted with crushed fruit or food colouring.
  • Orange segments and raisins make for a spook carved pumpkin style jack-o'-lantern.
  • Cottage cheese died red makes for an excellent and savoury 'brain food'. A little gold leaf on the rice cakes if you're feeling fancy.
  • Make a scary mouth by cutting a cracker in half, paint the outside edge red using crushed fruit or food colouring then add a healthy dollop of peanut butter between the two halves. Marshmallows or white chocolate buttons can be turned into regular teeth. A few raisins dotted in make good zombie teeth, blanched almonds work for vampire fangs or almond slithers can be used for a whole row of werewolf teeth.

And here's that fun, spooky Halloween recipe again in printable format.
