These classic waffles made in the Sage Smart Waffle Pro are soft and fluffy on the inside, lightly crisp on the outside and delicious all the way through.
My favourite waffle recipe to make in the Sage Smart Waffle Pro is classic waffles because they're super, super simple. You essentially have a bowl for the dry ingredients (flour and sugar), a jug for the wet ingredients (eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla), then mix the two together and your batter is ready to cook!
I was sent the Sage Smart Waffle Pro to review back in 2014 and it's still in great shape, so 7 years later I thought I'd update you all with how it's going. The short answer: still great! It's working as perfectly as it was the day we got it, stays clean really easily and most importantly, still makes delicious waffles in no time.
Now before I get on to telling you how to make classic waffles ("Sage waffles" as they're known in our house) allow me to share some of my favourite features on this brilliant machine:
- Once you tell the Smart Waffle what kind of waffle you're making, the cooking time is automatically calculated to suit your waffle style and colour
- There are options for different batter types (Belgian, Classic, Chocolate or Buttermilk), plus a special "custom" setting
- There are recipes for all four types in the booklet that comes with the machine, plus an explanation of how different settings affect the end product
- A nonstick moat surrounds the main iron to catch and toast any excess batter, which then lifts off cleanly
- There's a 'Bit More' button lets you toast further if that's your preference
The Sage might not be the cheapest option for your breakfast waffle fix, but it's well worth the investment.
Here's the full recipe for our favourite Safe waffles.
Ingredients
- 3 medium free range eggs
- 420 ml (14.2 floz) whole milk
- 125 g (4.4 oz) slightly salted butter melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 300 g (10.6 oz) self-raising white flour (self rising flour)
- 55 g (1.9 oz) white caster sugar (superfine sugar)
Equipment
Instructions
Preheat your waffle iron.
Whisk the eggs, milk and vanilla together in a jug.
Add the melted butter.
Whisk again.
Put the flour and sugar in a large bowl.
Mix together and make a well in the flour mixture.
Pour the milk mixture into the well.
Using your whisk, gradually incorporate flour into the milky mixture until you have a smooth batter.
Spoon a small ladleful of batter into the waffle maker. The batter will give 8 waffles in the Sage Smart Waffle Maker. Don't overfill your waffle iron as the batter will expand considerably as it cooks.
Cook for 3-5 minutes, depending on how well done you like your waffles.
Open the Sage waffle maker, lift out your waffles and repeat until they're all cooked.
Serve to plates and enjoy!
They're amazing on their own, with lemon juice and sugar, fruit and yogurt, or just a good drizzle of syrup.

Oh my goodness! I am jealous beyond jealous!! I bought a cheap little number from a certain cheap supermarket and before I had even cooked any waffles in it, it had blown up on me! My daughter was so disappointed because I had been promising her her first ever waffle...since she is a coeliac she cannot eat 'normal' waffles so I planned to make them for her for breakfast! As you will know if you have ever read my blog we are breakfast pancake fans...I make them every day for my daughter because she gets very hungry (and I stick all kinds of things in them, like huge amounts of ground almonds to give her a protein boost to keep her going till lunch!!). I thought a waffle maker would save me a lot of time cos I could make them instead! Hey ho...with that price tag I won't be buying one but I will just watch you making them and dream about doing it to!!!! ;). Nice video by the way!
