To celebrate the UK release of Tom & Jerry The Movie, which is available to rent at home now, we whipped up a Tom & Jerry afternoon tea, complete with Jerry mouse sandwiches that are almost too cute to eat!
Made with buttered bread, sliced lunch meats and a swish of edible black marker, these adorable open sandwiches are perfect to bring a taste of Jerry mouse to a fun Tom & Jerry themed afternoon tea.
The kids and I watched Tom & Jerry The Movie over the weekend and we really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how a classic animated duo could transfer to a live-action world but it works incredibly well!
The story sees the eponymous cat and mouse both trying to make it in New York. Jerry just wants somewhere warm to call his own with a few creature comforts, while Tom is hoping to make it big in the music business. By a twist of fate, the old rivals both end up in a swanky hotel, just as it's about to host the wedding of the century.
Chloë Grace Moretz (Hugo, If I Stay) is excellent as Kayla, the newly hired staff member tasked with getting rid of the hotel's mouse problem.
A host of other comic actors feature too, including Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Ken Jeong (Community, My Spy) and Michael Peña (Ant Man, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and all serve to make the film an enjoyable watch from start to finish.
Now, since the the movie is set in an upmarket hotel, you can see why I went for an afternoon tea theme, right? It's so much fun and I can almost imagine it being served in their dining hall.
For hungry families, this fantastic Tom & Jerry inspired spread doesn't just feature Jerry sandwiches, there are lots of other yummy treats too.
How do you fancy cucumber open sandwiches, fresh strawberries, homemade mini scones and mini wedges of very mouse-friendly Swiss cheese?
Of course, the Jerry Mouse sandwiches really are the star of the show and they're really easy to make! Read on for full instructions.
How to make Jerry mouse sandwiches
For these Jerry mouse sandwiches, we'll use slices of beef for the fur, ham for the ears, chicken for the mouth and cheese for the eyes. Finally, we'll use an edible pen to add the eye details and whiskers, which really bring little Jerry to life!
Use the step-by-step images below to help you make your Jerry Mouse sandwiches. As you can see, it's a simplified version of Jerry's face, using sliced meats to create a super fun result.
Ingredients
- 6 slices thick white bread
- 1 tbsp slightly salted butter
- 3 slices beef (sandwich slice)
- 1 slice chicken (sandwich slice)
- 1 slice ham (sandwich slice)
- 1 slice cheese
Equipment
- Edible black marker
Instructions
Grab thick slices of bread and cut out circles a little bigger than your template. Butter them.
First, cut out the main face shape from a slice of beef and lay on the butter bread disc.
Next, cut out a shape for the ear detail using ham and position in place.
Cut the mouth shape from a slice of chicken and position in place on your sandwich.
Cut out the eyes from a piece of cheese or chicken.
Add the pupils, eyelashes and whiskers using an edible black marker.
Repeat until you have 6 Jerry mouse sandwiches for your Tom & Jerry afternoon tea.
How to make mini cheese wedges
For the cartoon-like mini cheese wedges, I used a pack of emmental cheese slices.
Stacked the slices up, cut them into strips, then into triangles like so.
Turn the triangular stacks on their sides and voila! Adorable little Swiss cheese wedges.
How to make cucumber sandwiches
Cucumber sandwiches are an afternoon tea classic. And they're really delicious too!
To make them, cut out circles of bread of a similar size to your cucumber, butter, then top with cucumber slices. Easy!
How to make the mini scones
Scones are another classic afternoon tea staple and I made these ones from scratch but it's actually really easy to do.
I used this recipe to make the scones (you can use plant or dairy butter and milk).
To make the scones mini, simply cut them out with a small 3cm (1 and 1/4 inch) cutter and reduce the baking time to about 10 minutes. Cute and delicious!
